Working with clients in general can be a new learning experience, especially if their cultural background is different from our own. But textbooks can provide only so much general knowledge. How are counselors supposed to learn how to work with different cultures if they are reduced to a mere chapter in a textbook for a one-semester course? As someone whose background is Latina, my upbringing has prepared me to better serve people who share my cultural background.
